1 INTRODUCTION
Previous chapters have given insights into a selection of the public domain's
many faces. We have had discussion on historical development (Grosheide);1
ideas as to how we might visualise the boundaries between public and private
spaces (Deazley);2 questions raised as to whether there is any right to the public
domain (Cahir);3 examination of the public domain in the international sphere
(Taubman);4 analysis of the interaction between the public domain and the
public interest (Davies);5 discussion on categories of intellectual space (Macmil-
