AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT) 1992 NO. 171
EXPLANATORY STATEMENTStatutory Rule 1992 No. 171
Issued by the Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs
Australian Citizenship Act 1948
Australian Citizenship Regulations (Amendment)
Section 53 of the Australian citizenship Act 1948 (the Act) provides that the Governor-General may make regulations for the purposes of the Act.
In early 1991, the Australian citizenship Regulations were amended to reduce the citizenship application fee payable by age pensioners from $50 to $20 (SR 28 of 1991). Because the term 'age pensioner' had been taken to refer to a person receiving an age pension under the Social Security Act 1947, the fee reduction had not applied to people receiving the equivalent pension under the Veterans' Entitlement Act 1986, the age service pension, and this had been viewed as discriminatory.
A new Regulation 9(1B) has been inserted so that a person receiving an age service pension, and who produces their
a) pensioner health benefits card; or
b) service pension card; or
c) veterans' affairs card
will pay the reduced fee of $20 when making an application for citizenship.
The Regulation commenced on gazettal.
