79—New assessment to be made by assessors
(1) Every new
assessment, except as by this Act otherwise provided, shall be made by one or
more assessors, to be appointed by the trust.
(2) Every such
assessor shall, for the purpose of making the assessment, have power to put to
any owner or occupier of ratable land, or person in charge thereof, questions
upon all such matters as may be necessary to enable the assessor to state
correctly the particulars by this Act required to be stated in the assessment
with regard to the land.
(3) If, after being
informed by the assessor of his being an assessor, and of his purpose in
putting the questions, and of his authority under this Act to put the same,
any such owner or occupier or person in charge refuses or wilfully omits to
answer the same to the best of his knowledge and belief, or wilfully makes any
false statement in answer to any such question, he shall be guilty of an
offence against this Act and liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty dollars.
