MINES WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY (SUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENTS) BILL 62 OF 2011

                        FACT SHEET

Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary
             Requirements) Bill 2011

· This Bill is one of a package of Bills developed to give effect
to the national model work health and safety laws in
  Tasmania.

· The purpose of this Bill is to repackage and preserve
Tasmania's laws on mine safety when new, nationally
harmonised work health and safety laws come into effect.

· The Work Health and Safety (Transitional and Consequential
Provisions Bill) 2011 will repeal the existing Workplace Health
and Safety Act 1995, and with it, Tasmania's mine safety laws.

· Although a mine safety chapter of the Model Work Health
and Safety Regulations has been drafted, the chapter is not
  finalised.

· There will therefore be no mine safety chapter when
Tasmania's new work health and safety laws are expected to
come into effect on 1 January 2012.

· This Bill preserves and repackages Tasmania's existing mine
safety laws, allowing them to operate alongside and in
conjunction with the provisions delivered by the Work
  Health and Safety Bill 2011.
