Western Australian Consolidated Regulations[Regulation 3]
WRITTEN STATEMENT TO BE GIVEN BY THE COURT TO A YOUNG PERSON NOT REPRESENTED
BY A LEGAL PRACTITIONER
WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON’T HAVE A LAWYER
1. It is your right to have a lawyer represent you
in court.
2. There may be a free lawyer in the courthouse,
known as the “duty lawyer” or “duty counsel”. You may
seek their assistance if you wish.
3. If there is no lawyer for you at the court, you
may ask to have your case put off (“adjourned”) to another day so
that you can get legal advice.
4. The Legal Aid Commission and the Aboriginal
Legal Service provide free legal services to young people. There may also be
other free legal services in your area. To get their address and telephone
number, ask the court staff for help.
