AustLII Funding for International Projects

AustLII operates AsianLII, CommonLII and WorldLII, providing the technical infrastructure and staff to do so. AustLII has been developed since 1995 as a joint facility of the Faculty of Law of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and the Faculty of Law of the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

AsianLII, CommonLII and WorldLII, like AustLII, are free access services which are not funded by usage charges or advertisements. Funding is provided by contributors, a wide range of organisations who have an interest in facilitating access to legal information of particular types. By broadening the range of contributors as far as possible, AustLII aims to lighten the burden on any particular organisation of funding access to legal information.

New contributors are welcome. Any organisations or individuals who wish to support AustLII's international projects supporting free access to law, and particularly its operation of the Asian Legal Information Institute (AsianLII), Commonwealth Legal Information Institute (CommonLII) or World Legal Information Institute (WorldLII) are invited to become contributors to these international projects. The total AustLII Funding for International Projects funding for the year to date is $1,000 (Last year $463,100).

	----------	$212,600	The American Bar Association has provided funding to AustLII for the creation of the Liberia Legal Information Institute (LiberLII).
	----------	$200,000	The Australian Research Council (ARC) awarded a Linkage - Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) grant to AustLII to develop a European Law Collection.
	----------	$50,000	AusAID has provided from its Public Sector Linkages Programme (PSLP) funding for two projects involving the inclusion of content on AsianLII from selected countries, and supporting capacity development in free access to law in the India and South Asia project (2009-11, $199,989).
	----------	$500	Doogue & O'Brien Lawyers assist with the funding of CommonLII ($500).
	$1,000	----------	Filament Intelligence Pte Ltd assists with the funding of AsianLII.

Previous Funding Sources

AustLII wishes to thank those sources that have provided it with significant funding in past years, but no longer provide funding:

• The Australian Research Council (ARC) which provided funds under its Linkage, Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) Program in 2006 to support the development of WorldLII's infrastructure, among other projects.
• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided funds to enable the development of the WorldLII Catalog and WorldLII Websearch facilities under the Project DIAL RETA (Regional Technical Assistance) Program 1997-2002.
• The Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) provided $4,000 in 2007 to support AsianLII.
