Editorial - The AboriginalLB Lives!

In mid-September the Aboriginal Law Centre learned that ATSIC funding for the AboriginalLB for the financial year 1993-94 would not be provided. The year, of course, was already well advanced. The editors and the Centre's Chairperson urgently sought reconsideration of the decision. A number of subscriber organisations were notified and the AboriginalLB has received copies of numerous letters of support sent to ATSIC. Other bodies expressed interest in helping out in the short-term and, possibly, over a longer term.

Particularly helpful was the Law Foundation of NSW, which had funded the AboriginalLB in its first year in 1981 and co-funded it in its second year. The Executive Director, Terrence Purcell, authorised a Director's Grant sufficient to underwrite the editorial salary through October and production costs for this issue. This underwriting was critical and is gratefully acknowledged.

We have now learned that ATSIC funding for this financial year will be forthcoming after all so that survival is ensured (at least until next year!).

In the meantime the editors wish to express their thanks to the organisations and individuals who supported the AboriginalLB.

It seems that we must be doing something right!
